The first of the great empires from central Asia, that of the Scythians, now dominates much of northern India. The rest of the sub-continent is fragmented between many kingdoms, the most powerful of which is that of Shatavahana, based in the Deccan. Indian civilization continues to spread in the south of the peninsula, and this period sees the appearance of new states which will play an important part in India’s history.
