From its centre in the Deccan, the Shatavahana kingdom has expanded over a large territory, covering much of central India. The wealth and power of the Shatavahana kings is reflected in their patronage of both Buddhist and Hindu communities, and the construction of spectacular temples, often hewn out of rock.
