In Central America, while most peoples continue to practice a “slash-and-burn” agriculture, on the coastal lowlands of Mexico more intensive farming is giving rise to a more complex society. This will, over the coming centuries, give rise to the Olmec civilization.

The peoples of North America continue to live by hunting, fishing and foraging.
