At this date most of the peoples of North America still live as hunter-gatherers. However, agriculture is spreading in the South West, and now appears in a second location at around this time, in the Mississippi valley. Here, the Adena peoples build large earthworks for religious and ceremonial purposes, beginning a tradition that will last right up to the coming of Europeans.
In Central America, the first civilization of the western hemisphere has appeared, that of the Olmecs.
