Like the rest of the Middle East, Syria fell to the forces of Alexander the Great in the 330s BC, and then, after Alexander’s death, passed into the hands of Seleusus, his general. Seleucus’ successors have ruled Syria ever since.
Under Alexander and the Seleucids, many Greek colonies have been founded, including the large city of Antioch, capital of the Seleucid kings. Greek culture has spread around the region, at least amongst the ruling class and urban elites, and Greek language is replacing Aramaic as the international language of administration and commerce. Even the Jews, clinging tenaciously to their ancient traditions and beliefs, cannot resist the spread of Hellenism amongst them.
