Timeline of Middle East History: 3500 BC - AD 500
  • Israel 1000 BC

For the past few centuries Palestine has been inhabited by a people new to history, the Israelites. Recently, they have united under their kings Saul (c.1030-1005) and David (1005-965) to form a powerful kingdom. King David establishes the worship of Yahweh, the One True God, as the state religion. This is a development of the profoundest significance for later history. The belief system and code of ethics which the Israelites develop over the coming centuries will give rise to one of the great religions of world history, Judaism, and lay the foundations upon which two more of the great world religions, Christianity and Islam, will be built.
