Tigranes the Great (95-55 BC) briefly turned Armenia into a leading power, defeating neighbouring states including Parthia, before itself being defeated by the Romans in 66 BC. Tigranes was compelled to renounce much territory, and to become an ally of Rome. Armenia now functions as a buffer state between the Roman and Parthian empires; with both powers dabbling in the politics of the Armenian court, attempting to put their own candidate on the throne. In this, Rome is the more successful, and Armenia usually is an ally of the western empire.
