The Himyarate kingdom has united southern Arabia under its rule, although its commercial control over the Red Sea trade routes is being successfully challenged by the kingdom of Axum, in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, this is a period in which the agriculture and cities of the region flourish, with the irrigation systems kept in good repair and the Indian ocean trade still a source of prosperity.
A notable development in the region is that the ruling elite has been converted from its previously polytheistic religion to a monotheistic one, revolving around the worship of the “Lord Rahman”.
