Asia Minor remains a key region of the Roman Empire – indeed its relative importance has risen considerably with the loss of the western provinces. Its cities remain comparatively large and wealthy. Asia Minor by no means escaped the troubles of the Third century, when a large Gothic army terrorized the region and sacked several of its cities. Since then, however, the region has experienced a large measure of peace, and the economy has by and large recovered.
The inhabitants of the region are now mostly Christian in religion.
