After giving four centuries of unity to an enormous area the Han empire split up into three parts in AD 220, leading to centuries of division and barbarian occupation, particularly in the north.

Despite this weakness, China's influence on the nations around her remains undimmed. Kingdoms in Korea and Japan continue to develop, and to the south a new state, Champa, has appeared.
