The Han empire has now governed China for 400 years. It will not do so for much longer. Forces are at work which will tear it apart and divide China for several centuries.

By this date, however, China’s already long-lasting influence upon the wider world is now bearing fruit in the appearance of centralised kingdoms in Korea and Japan, and of literate civilizations in those countries.
