By 500 BC a brilliant new civilization, that of Ancient Greece, has emerged into the bright light of history, setting the scene for dramatic achievements in many fields. The small Greek city states are dwarfed by their eastern neighbour, the vast Persian empire, the largest state in the ancient world. Within a few years the Persian Wars will occur between the two sides, and against all the odds the Greeks will win.
Further east, Indian civilization has also reached a high level of sophistication, and is giving rise to two new religions, Buddhism and Jainism. Still further east, Chinese society is producing an ideology of world significance, Confucianism.
